Death will Set Sail in … one month!

July 5, 2020

Detectives, we’re into the final stretch: Death Sets Sail, the ninth AND FINAL full-length Murder Most Unladylike mystery, will publish in ONE MONTH! (The date is a little different depending on where you are in the world: Australia and New Zealand’s publication date is 4th August, while for the UK and Ireland the official publication date is 6th August – so I’m posting this on the 5th of July, halfway between the two!)

If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, now’s the perfect opportunity: you can pre-order from (deep breath) Amazon, Blackwell’s (they ship anywhere in the world, for all you Americans and Canadians looking to get your hands on this edition!), Booktopia (for Australian and NZ fans), Dymock’s (again, for Australian and NZ fans), Easons (for my Irish fans!), Foyle’s, Hive (though if you can, it’s best to order direct from your local independent bookstore, as it makes sure they get all the profits from the sale!), Waterstones and WH Smith. I am working very hard to sort out a way for you to get signed copies – I don’t know quite what this will look like, or even whether it will happen before the release date, because of these extraordinary covid circumstances, but I promise I’m doing my very best, and I’ll update you all as soon as I can!

A lot of you have asked me for hints about what might be happening in Death Sets Sail, but all I’m able to tell you right now is what the official blurb says:

Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong are in Egypt, where they are taking a cruise along the Nile. They are hoping to see some ancient temples and a mummy or two; what they get, instead, is murder.

Also travelling on the SS Hatshepsut is a mysterious society called the Breath of Life: a group of genteel English ladies and gentlemen, who believe themselves to be reincarnations of the ancient pharaohs. Three days into the cruise their leader, Theodora Miller, is found dead in her cabin, stabbed during the night. It soon becomes clear to Daisy and Hazel that Theodora’s timid daughter Hephzibah, who is prone to sleepwalking, is being framed. And within the society, everyone has a reason to want Theodora dead…

Daisy and Hazel leap into action and begin to investigate their most difficult case yet. But there is danger all around, and only one of the Detective Society will make it home alive…

However if you do want to find out more, I’m going to be able to release an (unspoilery!) chapter later this month via my newsletter. So sign up NOW to make sure you get it in your inbox!

And one final thing … there’s an announcement coming your way at either the end of July or the beginning of August. I can’t say exactly when it’ll go out yet … but constant vigilance! All will be revealed soon …

Exciting news, Detectives: the numbers are in, and Death Sets Sail is floating at the very top of the charts! It’s the NUMBER ONE paperback in the UK, it’s NUMBER FOUR overall in the UK children’s and YA chart (in the week that we got a new Stephenie Meyer and a new Jeff Kinney) and it’s NUMBER TWELVE of all books sold in the UK. That’s ALL books, not just kids!
Death Sets Sail is out now – and my publisher Puffin thought you might want to celebrate that fact! They’ve put together a (socially distanced) party pack to help you and your friends wave goodbye to the series in style.
‘the story unfolds neatly and is satisfyingly twisty. It has a strong sense of place … and two budding romances, and explores the powerful bonds of friendship as girls grow up.’
At the end of a series, you want a big finish. Something to make the series go out with a bang. Well, Robin Stevens did just that with Death Sets Sail. Packed with suspense throughout, and unimaginable twists and turns, Death Sets Sail was without a doubt the best book in the Murder Most Unladylike series.
I have another event coming up next week – a live Q&A and reading in partnership with the Arvon Foundation’s Arvon at Home programme on Tuesday 11th August at 4pm. You can book tickets NOW – they’re £3 per screen – and I hope as many of you as possible will log on!
Because it’s publication day, I’m sharing a video of me reading from the first chapter of Death Sets Sail. But beware … the first chapter contains the first SPOILER! So watch … if you dare!

  1. I preordered it back in February! Yes, that is how excited I am about it. I also signed up to your newsletter last November and have really enjoyed them. My friend got a video message from you for her 11th birthday and I was wondering if you can do that fo other occasions like graduation? I would really like it if you do! By the way, she really enjoyed watching it and so did I.

  2. August 6th is marked on my calendar! Thank you for the list of places to buy it from because I wasn’t sure if Amazon would ship to other countries. Now I’m going to get it from Blackwells. I’m so excited for the announcement!

        1. You know what, that is a brilliant idea! I honestly thought it was a new book because she said in her update video that she was WRITING in lockdown, but I have written a play script before, so maybe that’s what she’s doing! She did say we would love it, and we have been nagging for a film/show for years!

  3. Hello Robin

The blurb was great! can’t wait to actually read the book. August still seems so far away?.

  4. Eeeek! I’m so excited! I’ve started a count down chart! I can’t wait. Have you read the description on the puffin website? It gives me chills!

I’m definitely looking forward to MMU9 and finding out to what happens to the Detective Society and other characters. Also I can’t wait for the big announcement! Is it about what you’re writing next?

  10. As soon as I heard when it was coming out, I put it in my calendar!
Congrats Robin by the way! I bet it will be epic! ???

    1. trust me, i legit COULDN’T breath when i found out there was a new book coming out and one of them was going to die.
i hope none of them die! like HURRY UPP AUGUST! >:O

      1. I was so shocked when I first read the blurb, and I keep trying to find loopholes so that they both survive! But to be honest I think it would be a really fitting ending for Daisy or Hazel to give their life for the detective society. If it’s Daisy (and I think it will be) then that would mean that she could give Hazel the title of detective society president, although she could still make them co presidents if they both survive. I also think that it might give Amina the opportunity to become vice president, which would be cool!
I still hope that they’re both ok though!

        1. oh yes! amina would be a pretty good detective i think. but if daisy dies, i pray that it was fake and she would like save the world.
          that would be great.

  11. Why does August feel so far away???? ???
It’s probably because it’s still July. But. It’s. So. Close. Yay!!!!
    I can’t wait!!!!!

  12. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I’m so excited!! I got the case of the drowned pearl and death sets sail preordered for my 14th birthday!! I CAN NOT WAIT TO READ DEATH SETS SAIL!! I plan on reading death sets sail in one sitting.

  13. Hi,
This book sounds amazing and I’m counting down the days until 6th August. It’s sad that it’s the last one though?

  14. I’ve loved this series since my grandma got me the first book for Christmas almost four years ago, and while I never did actually read the other book she bought alongside Murder Most Unladylike (which isn’t normal for me, since I am the biggest – read ‘only real’ – bookworm in my family, after all), I am so glad I decided to give the book a chance!
It’s crazy to think I may have never actually realised how good this series is.
I can’t wait until Death Sets Sail comes out, and while I’m sad it’s the final one I’m sure this will be a worthy finale.
