Death Sets Sail – exclusive extract!

July 21, 2020

The ninth and FINAL Murder Most Unladylike Mystery novel, Death Sets Sail, is out very soon – on the 6th of August in the UK and Ireland, and the 4th of August in Australia and New Zealand!

I’m keeping its plot very secret until publication date, so you can have the chance to read it without being spoiled (and even when you have read it, I hope you’ll stay quiet about what happens in it, to give other fans the same experience). But I do have a special treat for you – the second chapter of Death Sets Sail, which contains no spoilers but does give you a flavour of what’s to come in the book.

Fans who have signed up to my newsletter got to read this last weekend – so if you haven’t done that yet, I’d recommend it!

So here it is …

What do you think? Does it make you more excited about the book? And, most importantly, what do you think will happen next? Let us know in the comments!

I’m very pleased to say that my Behind the Book video, featuring a Q&A, a workspace tour and a reading from the last two chapters of Death Sets Sail, is available to watch NOW on the Puffin YouTube channel. There’s a link below – I hope you enjoy it!
I’ve got a new video on the way! Behind the Book with Robin Stevens will premiere on the Puffin YouTube Channel on Friday 18th September at 6pm BST.
For the rest of September, your prompt will be resolutions. This was suggested by Detective Society member Neve – and it seems like a great choice, since this is the beginning of the school year, a time full of new challenges and big decisions.
I’ve got good news for Scottish fans – I may not be able to come visit you in person this autumn, but I’ll be able to be with you virtually! I’m teaming up with the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour and Book Week Scotland for a week of absolutely FREE events for Scottish schools.
You have until the 6th of September to send all of your questions about the MMU series, The Ministry of Unladylike Activity, Howl the puppy or anything else you might want to know to a special email address that my publisher Puffin has set up: I’m going to be answering my very favourites on a new ‘Behind the Book’ video, premiering on the 18th of September on the Puffin YouTube channel.

      1. I promise I will still be an author! I can’t say anything about what’s next until August, but keep watching this website for more information!

        1. Can’t wait to find out what book’s your writing next Robin!!! I’ll keep checking on this website to find out and I am so glad you will still be an author as I love your books?!!!

  4. Once MMU is over can you plsssss still write detective novels?? Like im not sure what about maybe 2 rivals always finding themselves doing the same case?? I need more murder in my life (as in books)

      1. I’m going to try re-read the whole MMU series before Death Sets Sail comes out on August 6th! Maybe that will make the two weeks come quicker!
I remember waiting for Top Marks for Murder to come out and it felt like ages, but time really does go quickly because now I am waiting for for the last MMU book!
Love you so much Robin, these are some of the best books I have ever read!!!!

  5. I can’t believe August is so close!! I am so excited for this book and I know it’s going to be so special! And this is such an intriguing first chapter…

  6. Yesss I guessed it! Daisy is in love with Amina! I read this last weekend and I’m soooooo excited for the 4th! Also, THANK YOU SO MUCH Robin for this extract. I can’t wait for the announcement that is hopefully coming soon? Thank you also for just writing this series. It means so much to me, and I know it’s the same for others.

  8. Wow! This extract is so intriguing and I really can’t wait! You’re such a talented author, Robin, and I love your books so much! The day I finish Death Sets Sail will be a very emotional one for me, but i’m glad to know that you will remain an author – and my favourite one at that! This series means more to me than just a collection of books, the characters are my friends and I love them so much. Thank you for this incredible series.

  9. I am so excited! I know that I will probably cry when I finish it, so many questions are swirling in my head I can’t wait!! I’m really worried about who might die…
But will Daisy and Hazel be appearing in another series, will you keep writing Mini mysteries. I can’t wait to find out!

    1. I can’t wait! I really don’t want either of them to die as I feel so close to them and I feel like I have followed the journey through to the end. I think that if Hazel died then Daisy would find out just how much she actually needs and relies on Hazel, even though she thinks she can do it on her own, but if Daisy dies I think it would be the opposite and she would really come into her won and realise that she doesn’t have to rely on Daisy to make all the decisions, and she can become more of her own person.

      1. That’s true, but seeing that Hazel narrates the book I think it’s unlikely she will be the one to die. Although, of course, it could switch to Daisy’s narration at the end.

      2. i totally agree, though hazel is aready becoming her own person throughout the book, and she’s having her own ideas and stuff, something daisy would never have thought of in the first book. WE STAN CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. same with daisy, because in the first book she thought she was the best, but now you can see that she’s more open-minded about most ideas, and apparently we’re gonna see a more shy and vulnerable daisy in DSS sooo YAS

        1. I completely agree! Character development is what makes characters more complex and relatable, especially when it comes to Daisy, because she seemed kind of mean at times in the first book.
Less than two weeks to go! ? I can’t wait!!!

  10. Poor Beanie!! I literally almost cried reading about that. ?
I love these characters so so much and I can’t believe the series is ending! I wish the 6th August could come now! For now, I’m going to re read as many of the books as I can in time for the publication date. I can’t wait!!!!

        my pan butt is screaming
        (yes im pansexual)

      2. Towards the end of Top Marks for Murder Daisy goes red and tries to make out that Amina is only ‘alright’ and that’s exactly what she was like around Martitia, so I definitely saw that one coming. It does explain a lot.

        1. Yeah, I thought I was the only one who noticed that! Daisy definitely tries to hide her feelings a lot, which is sad but understandable seeing as the series is set in the 1930s, when people were a lot less accepting than they are now.

          1. very true, in the 1900’s (up to like maybe 1980’s? idk) i think people thought it was like a deseaise ( i cant spell), even though way before that, people were in love with the same sex, like Shakespeare and Anne frank. yep, they were bi. (and since we’re talking about sexuality, i just wanna say THANK YOU robin for adding a lesbian character. it warms my lil’ pan heart, and daisy kinda helped me realise that im pansexual. so thank you from the bottom of my heart

  11. I am so excited for August!!!!!! I do think Daisy likes Amina, and I feel so so so so sorry for Beanie?????. CANNOT WAIT FOR WHEN IT COMES OUT!!!!!!

    1. Beanie is my favourite character, reading the start of that chapter nearly made me cry. Why do the worst things have to happen to the best characters??!

  12. I Looovvee the extract I can’t wait to read more! also can’t wait to see what you are going to write next! Will any new characters be appearing?

  13. omg I’ve realised that all of your quotes are by daisy (except the first one) and I AM SCREAMINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG (i saw your newest one on twitter!)

  14. I loved reading the extract ?can’t believe its coming to an end. I think I might start writing Fan fiction based on the MMU series. Your books are always soo gripping.

  15. When it says that it is the last mystery, doesn’t it look like one of the girls is going to die? The book description on Puffin says only one of the detective society will make it back alive! Hazel or Daisy might die which is so sad! Noooo ?

    1. I’ve just realised that Daisy and Hazel are not the only ones in the Detective Society! There’s kitty beanie Lavinia Ping and the boy in that Chinese gang (he and ping Andre in a spoonful of murder). So does that mean, only one of ALL those people make it back alive?

      1. No, because hardly any are going to egypt, only hazel daisy, probably the junior pinkertons and a few others!
