Christmas is coming soon! I’ve been getting a lot of requests from people who want to buy the perfect present for the Detective Society member in their life, and so I’ve put together a quick gift guide to help out!
For the fan who’s read all of Daisy and Hazel’s mysteries, give High Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson. This is the perfect companion to my books: it’s a murder mystery featuring two fantastic female detectives. It’s set in 2019, on the Tri Estate in London, so it’s not exactly like my books – but it’s perfect for anyone who loves solving mysteries!
For the fan who feels a little too old for the Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries this year, give A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (no relation to Sharna!). This is the perfect YA murder mystery – it’s contemporary, like High Rise Mystery, and it features brilliant detective Pippa who’s out to discover the truth about an unsolved murder in her home town.
For fans who want to read more classic crime, try Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile (to get you ready for Murder Most Unladylike 9!) or Josephine Tey’s Miss Pym Disposes (one of my inspirations for Murder Most Unladylike). I’d say both of these books are 12+ (though use your knowledge of the person you’re buying for to decide what’s right for them!)
For the fan who wants to know more about codebreaking after Cream Buns and Crime, give The Usborne Official Spy’s Handbook or Usborne’s Over 50 Secret Codes. And if the person you’re buying for wants to get a bit more advanced, try The Code Book by Simon Singh or (for extremely big brains!) The GCHQ Puzzle Book.
There are plenty of fingerprint kits and spy/detective kits around, too, for fans who want to actually get out there and start work – here’s one from the Science Museum and one (very high-tech model!) from John Lewis. I’ve also seen a detective kit in Waterstones stores – they’re everywhere this year so you won’t have to look too hard!
For the fan who’s loved their copy of Murder Most Unladylike to death, may I remind you that there’s a beautiful hardback edition available, with a special introduction and extra story?
And finally, for the fan who wants to hide from their family as soon as Christmas is over, the audio edition of Cream Buns and Crime will be ready for download on the 26th December. So if you pre-order it now, it’ll magically appear on the device you choose on that day!
And that’s it! Do remember, though, that the best gifts are the ones that have the most thought put into them, not the ones that cost the most (or any!) money. I’m not asking you to buy all, or any, of the things on this list – I just thought it might be helpful to you and your loved ones. Have a wonderful holiday season, whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, or whether you celebrate Diwali, Eid or another festival at another time in the year!
